Belvedere Via Roma

Audioguide about the place

A large terrace overlooking the sea: the belvedere, or lungomare, as the Lampedusans call it, is a particularly evocative vantage point. From here, you can admire the southern Mediterranean, separating the island from North Africa, stretching to the horizon. The panorama extends from the southeast quay, where the ferry and hydrofoils connecting Linosa and Sicily dock in the old port, to the inlet of the new port, and even further west toward the west.

As is often the case on Lampedusa, this vantage point offers more than just splendid views: upon closer inspection, you can discern interesting elements linked to its history and culture.

Looking down to the left, you can see the statue of the Madonna, welcoming those arriving by sea, resting on the roof of a military structure dating back to World War II.

The belvedere marks the southern edge of Via Roma and an area, reaching the intersection with Via Pollini, that can be considered the island's cultural hub. This section of Via Roma is home to the Pelagie Regional Archaeological Museum, with the Garden of the Righteous behind it. Almost opposite the museum is the headquarters of the nonprofit association Archivio Storico Lampedusa, which has been involved in reconstructing and disseminating the island's history for years. Further along is the shop of the island's last sponger. It is also here that, during the summer, a stage is set up for various important cultural events.

Furthermore, where private homes now stand, once stood the ancient Castle, built in 1810 by the Englishman Alessandro Fernandez, who joined the remains of the ancient towers with stone and lime walls. Indeed, sources record that in ancient times the so-called "Orlando Tower" stood on this very spot, a vantage point for controlling the sea. According to some reports, the Castle building was destroyed in 1939.
